Quotes from Shakespeare

Quotes from Shakespeare
Identify the speaker. To which character does the particular quotation relate? How? The first one is a worked example.

Finally, each quotation in your blog under headings: that is, one heading for each of the characters to whom the speech most relates (eg Claudio, Hero, Beatrice, Benedick, Leonato, Don Pedro, Don John etcetera). You should end up with a range of quotations for each of the major figures in the play that together, create ‘pictures’ of the characters.

He hath borne himself beyond the promise of his age, doing in the figure of a lamb the feats of a lion” (I, i, 13-5).1.

Here a messenger, reporting to Leonato, is describing Claudio’s prowess in battle. Claudio has displayed maturity beyond his years and though he seems an unassuming character, Claudio has demonstrated great strength and courage.

“In our last conflict four of his five wits went halting off, and now is the man governed with one” (I, i, 62-4).beatrice

Beatrice is talking to Leonato about Benedick. She is saying that Benedick is trying so hard to insult her, but only one of his five insults really work. In other words his insults are not good enough for Beatrice.

“He is sooner caught than the pestilence, and the taker runs presently mad” (I, i, 83-4).Beatrice, talking about Benedict

Beatrice is talking about Benedick. She is saying that who ever associates with him with go as crazy as he is, quicker then they would be able to catch the plague.

“Only this commendation I can afford her, that were she other than she is she were unhandsome” (I, i, 168-70).

Don Pedro is talking to Claudio about Hero. He is saying that she is an average woman. He is complementing her in a way, but is saying she is like everyone else, theres nothing really special about her.

In mine eye she is the sweetest lady that ever I looked on” (I, i, 182-3).

Claudio is speaking to Benedick about Hero. Claudio is saying that Hero is basically his dream girl. He thinks that she is the perfect one for him and that there is no other girl out there that is as perfect as Hero.

“Shall I never see a bachelor of three-score again? Go to … thou wilt needs thrust they neck into a yoke” (I, i, 193-5).

Benedick is speaking to Don Pedro about Hero. He is saying that he is going to be the only batchelor left in the world. He is saying that everyone is going to get married exept for himself.

But now … that war thoughts have left their places vacant, in their rooms come thronging soft and delicate desires” (I, i, 290-2).

Don John is speaking to Conrade about himself. Don John is saying that he rather be disliked by Don John then cherished by him and that it fits himself to think unworthy of him. Don John is basically saying let him be that he is and don't try to change him because it isn't going to work.

“How tartly that gentleman looks. I never can see him but I am heart burned an hour after” (II, i, 3-4).

Universal Themes

Universal Themes
One of the reasons we study Shakespeare's plays is because of the universal themes that can be found in the content.Answer the following:
1. What do you think a universal theme is?
2. What universal themes can be found in Much Ado About Nothing?
3. Knowing about universal themes, write a paragraph addressing the following:
Is Shakespeare's play Much Ado About Nothing relevant for a modern audience? Explain your answer with reference to the play's content and characters.

ANSWERS

A1,
I think a universal theme means things that applies world wide at any time period.

Class,
As a class, we have determined that a universal theme encompasses the following things:1. It is an idea or concept that can be easily related to by a wide variety of individuals.2. The idea or concept is not limited to one society, culture or time period.3. The ideas or concepts that can be viewed as universal themes are easily recognisable.

A2,
Love can be found as a universal theme in this play. The play deals with love of Claudio and Hero and Benedick and Beatrice. This universal theme can relate to a wide variety of individuals as love is a part of each persons life. Love in this play is easily recognized and the idea is not limited to one society, culture or time period as love has existed since the earth was first developed.

Class,
As a class, we also came up with the following list in answer to Question 2:1. Jealousy - Don John is jealous of Claudio and all the attention he was receiving. There was evidence of jealousy between Don John and his brother Don Pedro (Don John is jealous of the respect and admiration, etc that Don Pedro receives because of his position).2. Heartbreak - Hero feels heartbroken when Claudio rejects her and accuses her of being unfaithful. Claudio also feels heartbreak when he is led to believe that Hero has betrayed him and also when he finds out she is 'dead' and he realizes that she was pure. 3. Anger - The supposed betrayal of Claudio (by Hero) demonstrates that many characters display anger. Claudio is angry, Leonato is angry, Beatrice becomes angered. As well as this, Don John appears to be an angry character throughout the play. 4. Love - Throughout the play, the story line is focused on the love of two separate couples: Hero and Claudio and Benedict and Beatrice. Hence, love is one of the central themes in the play.

A 3,
The Shakespeare play ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ is very relevant for a modern audience as the universal themes that are found in it, still exist today. Such as Love, jealousy and heart break, just to name a few. Love in this world today is all around, there is young love, which you see in middle and senior school, and there is adult love, which is when couples get married and live very happily. When Claudio and Hero fall in love in the movie, they love each other at first sight and in this world today love at first sight still exists. Some people’s reasons for getting married and having relationships are that they saw the girl or the guy at first sight and new that they were the one for them. Jealousy happens everywhere you look, in school, university, in the public, etc. In the movie Don John is jealous of Claudio because he is not getting all of the attention. This is examples of real life situations. For example in school if some attention seekers do not get all of the attention they want, they get jealous, and angry. This play is very relevant to the modern times as the universal themes are found in both the movie and the out side world.

Book report three '...startled by his furry shorts!'

I am reading this new book called '...startled by his furry shorts!'. This is a very good book and is a typical teenage book involving boys and girls. It is a book about how a young teenage girl is with this guy she has a crush on and they start kissing. Then minutes later he is unsuspectingly found snogging wet Lindsey, stick insect and drip, three so called to be 'sluts'. This is all I am up to in the book, but I find it very interesting and am liking this book so far. I like how it is a teenage book and is about boys, love and relates to todays society. I am looking forward to reading on, as I am excited to find out what is going to happen next.

Researching Elizabethan England

Researching Elizabethan England

Brief facts about Sir William Shakespeare

The role of women in Elizabethan England

Women believed that they were less important then men in this period of time. They were inferior to men. Elizabethan women were no where near as important as the men. When they had families women were obligated to obey the men even if it was their brothers, uncles or husband. Their roles in society were to look after the houses and basically make sure everything was fine, as they were known as house women.

Class distinctions in Elizabethan England

The class distinction in Elizebethan England is basically the difference between the upper class and the lower class. People could not move out of their social class, once they were in it they could not move, it was like from when they were born to when they died the people belonged in the same social class their whole life. The noble were the people who were rich and were a lot better off then any of the other classes. There were many social classes in between the noble and poor class. The poor were known as the people who were at the bottom and had the worst of every world.

Entertainment in Elizabethan England

Entertainment in the Elizabethan era was extremely important. Elizabethan entertainment was popular whenever there was something to celebrate! A betrothal, wedding, victories and festivals. Court entertainment was also very regular as they had a lot of feasts, jousts, and banquets, involving lots of music and dancing.

Education in Elizabethan England

Education during the Elizabethan era was mostly for boys and people who belonged in the middle and upper classes. The basic principles of childhood and education would be started in the home. These basic elements included: Respecting their mother and father, Asking their parents blessing, Rising early in the morning and saying their prayers, Table Manners - the correct behavior for eating small morsels, chewing properly, using a knife and using a napkin, Children would also be taught their 'place' in society which included where they should sit at the table, and Elizabethan Girls would be taught obedience to the male members of the family. Their education would then generally diverse from the boys to concentrate on housewifely duties and sometimes music and dance.

I signed up for the musical because I knew that there was dancing involved and I love dancing, people from the previous years said that it is so much fun and you meet so many new people, all of my friends where doing it and I joined to feel good in myself and help out Banksia. I got asked to cerograph some of the dancers and I was fearing that the dances I would cerograph weren’t going to be good enough, the captains weren’t going to like it and that all the pressure would get to my head because I had to fit in musicals, homework and all of my other commitments. However in the end I had nothing to fear about because they all understood, as they were going through the exact same stage as I was. I was expecting that I was going to meet lots of people, have fun, feel good in myself for doing something for my house and perform dancing, in which I love. The musicals did live up to my expectations and more. The benefits of this musical was that I met so many new people, so many that when I needed help with something or needed to talk to someone about something I could just go to them even if they were in other grades or social groups. For example I met this girl named Maddy and she’s a senior and when I was having trouble with my math’s homework she was there to help me. I did have so much fun and now I can look back on it and say that the musicals was one of the most fun experiences in my life. I gained so much from the musical as I now have so many fabulous memories that I will always have with me. I would defiantly recommend doing the house musicals because it was one the best experiences I have ever had and no doubt about it, it could be yours too. I can guarantee that you will love it and when the year has ended and you look back at everything you did; musicals will be one of the activities you gained the most from.

"Save the last dance" book review 2!

“Save the last dance”
Book review two

I am still enjoying the book “Save the last dance” very much. Truthfully I have never found a book more interesting in my life. From where I left off last week when she received the letter from Damien and was over ally excited I am up to the point where she goes into the bar to try find and socialize with her lover boy. At this point in time Saph’s life is pretty perfect. She gets to dance as a basketball cheerleader, which has been her dream and she gets to stair at her all time dream man, Damien. However it was prohibited for Saph to talk to Damien as cheerleaders in the previous years were found in the night club pashing the basket balers, so the rules now where that all cheerleaders were not aloud to socialize with any of the players. Saph ignored that rule and after a game one night she asked her dad to pick her up half an hour later. Saph put heels and a dress on after the game and hid her bags. She was determined to see him and give him the letter she wrote back, so she asked Lesley if she could get her into the bar. I have only read up to here but I am very curious to know what happens in the bar with Damien. It can only be either good or bad. I like how in every moment of the book something good is happening and that it is not just boring all of the time. I am looking forward to writing next weeks review.

Book review one "Save the last dance"

“Save the last dance”
Book review
one

I have just started reading the book “Save the last dance” by Thalia Kalkipsakis. I am officially in love with this book and I think the reason is because it has something to do with dancing. The main girl is Saph and she has a best friend names Summer. I have only read a little bit of it as I had a very busy week but what I have read so far is fabulous. Saph is a cheerleader for the basketball squad. She is over ally obsessed with Damien who is apart of the basketball squad and wished she knew him. On Valentines Day there was a letter on the table sitting there for Saph. She was hoping it was from Damien and she picked it up and opened it. The letter was joyfully from Damien. Saph never thought that the day would come when she received a letter from Damien the famous basketball player. I like how it is a typically teenage girl book that is about a boy, as I love and enjoy these sorts of books. This text is so good I just want to keep going and going. I am looking forward to writing next weeks review.

Bullying ad

Task!

You need to develop an advertisement (on word, publisher, photoshop, etc) that could be used as part of an anti-bullying campaign.

Once you have designed your advertisement you need to write a summary of the ad, addressing the following things:
1. What message you hope the ad will deliver.
2. Why did you make certain choices regarding colour schemes, graphics and words?
3. How effective do you think this ad will be?
4. Who is the target audience of your ad? I.e which age group, boys or girls, etc.

Bullying ad

The general message of this bullying advertisement is that bullying is a crime and is not permitted to be done anywhere! I chose the words “Bullying is a crime” because it tells people what the ad is about and tells the viewers what bullying is. I chose the words to be in big black writing so it draws attention and captures the audience’s eyes. I chose to put a picture of a guy bullying another little guy so people know what the poster is about when they look at it. This illustration also helps get the message across. I chose to put red lines through the illustration so that the viewers know that it is wrong, as it is crossed out! This ad will be highly effective as it will draw many peoples attention and keeps them alert that there actions towards other people may mean they are committing a crime. The target audience of this ad is all students in middle school, years 7 to 9 and ages around 11 to 14. This ad will be good for both boys and girls.

Advertising powerpoing

Task

I was away for this lesson but here it is. The questions that are included at the beginning of the slideshow need to be completed on a word document that can be copied and pasted onto your blog on Wednesday.

You should aim to complete the questions for at least 3 ads during the lesson and 1 for homework (meaning that by Wednesday you must have at least 4 sets of answers for your blog

Go Green

1. In this add I see a light green happy frog, sitting down with its tongue poking out. I see the words “Go Green!” in big letters and the words “reduce, recycle, reuse” in small letters. I see the symbol for recycle all around the frog.

2. The purpose of this advertisement is to get people to recycle. I know this as it used the words recycle, it shows the recycle symbol all around the picture and it is green. This advertisement is most likely trying to get people to remember that recycling is compulsory and that it will help frogs and other species.

3. This advertisement is most likely aimed for around younger people, like ages 6 upwards. This is because it is simple, has a cartoon image on it and is all one colour with easy words. This advertisement is more for making sure that younger children know about recycling as it is easy to understand.

4. The creator has chosen to use particular graphical features to get people to notice and relies what the advertisement is about easily. This is done by the simple green colour, cartoon picture and easy words.

5. The creator has chosen to use particular language features so that people get the drift and understand it. I think he has chosen these types of words to give the audience a little bit of encouragement as it simply says “Go Green”.

6. Yes this advertisement does achieve its purpose as when I read it, it constantly reminded me about recycling.

Global warming

1. In this picture I see two polar bears sleeping in a box in a revolting place with cabbage surrounding them. I see little placed everywhere and spills of liquids on the ground. I see graffiti on the wall and the words “GLOBAL WARMING IS LEAVING MANY HOMELESS”.

2. I think the purpose of this advertisement is to get people to understand that global warming is terrible and it is taking over our lives. It is endangering many species and leaving not only animals but humans homeless.

3. This advertisement is aimed at the ages 15 and older. I say this because many young people do not know what global warming is and as they read the advertisement they will not understand. The colours and images will not appeal that much to them as they are not bright and catchy! This advertisement is meant to great sympathy for the world.

4. The creator of this advertisement has chosen to use specific graphical features to creator sympathy. He/she uses a very poor and low area that has garbage everywhere and a wall that has been graphitized. The creator used animals that everyone thinks is cute just to get them to realize that it is hurting many people and animals even if they are cute, rich or poor.

5. The creator of this advertisement has chosen particular language features to make it simple and to get straight to the point. The first thing the viewers will read is global warming as it has its own line and is situated at the top. This will enable readers to know what it is about. The advertisement also gives a hint of what it is doing to the world which reminds readers how bad it is.
6. Yes I think this advertisement achieves its purpose as it short and simple and creates sympathy.

Cigarette advertisement

1. In this advertisement I see a whole lot of used cigarettes bunched together in the middle of the ad. I see the words “Don’t stick your butt out the car window” and “Please butt it, then bin it” and I see the keep Australia beautiful logo.

2. The purpose of this advertisement is to keep people alert about where cigarettes should be placed. It is trying to get people not to litter.

3. This ad is aimed for the ages 18 and older, as cigarettes are only legal for people over 18.

4. The creator chose these graphic features so they know what the ad is about and in this case they know it’s about cigarettes as it has cigarettes placed in the middle of the picture.

5. The creator ha chosen to use particular language features so they people remember it and it keeps getting stuck in your mine. The creator reminds people about what to do with the cigarette when it is finished by the words he has used.

6. Yes I think the ad achieves its purpose at it is catchy and memorable.

"The Real Cost of Posh's Locks" Article

Task

"The Real Cost of Posh's Locks" Article
Your task is to write two (2) letters to the editor of The Courier Mail in response to this article. One letter needs to be in support of the way the paper addressed the issue, while your second letter needs to disagree with the paper's interepretation and representation of the people involved and the issue itself.

Support of the way the paper addressed the issue

Dear Tamarak Kaminsky,

My name is Jaime-Lee Bradford and I am writing to you to support the way you have addressed this issue in the paper. This write up in the paper is a significant piece as it really gets everyone thinking about hair extensions and where they come from. I completely agree with you, now days you see several people walking around with hair extensions clueless, not knowing what people had to go through and sacrifice.

The issue you have addressed in the Courier Mail is very relevant and important. I know that when I first read this article, it got me thinking. The way you got the victims who sacrificed their hair to quote in this article, made the write up ten times stronger. This is evident in the last column of the article when she quotes “When I was younger, I was made to have my own hair cut off at the temple”, Also obvious in the first column “strolled down the street in a push-up bra, with $5000 worth of imported human hair bouncing on her shoulders”. Tamarak I like the way you supported this issue as you looked at both sides, the first side you looked at is the people who wears them side and the second side you looked at is the victim’s side. This article makes people aware about hair extensions and should definitely be re submitted in the Courier Mail.

I hope you will consider re submitting this article and or even writing more articles on hair extensions you, as the editor of this article could go so far and help the world by the way you write. To make people not take hair extensions for granted and to get them to understand you could maybe put other articles about the same topic in, put the article the real cost of Posh’s locks in magazines, books etc and maybe even put the article into action and do an add about it. I am willing to help and support you as the way you addressed this issue is tremendous. This will eliminate and minimize the amount of people who take hair extensions for granted. I could not thank you enough for taking your time to read this letter I am writing to you to support the way you have addressed this issue on the paper..

Yours Faithfully,
Jaime-Lee Bradford

Disagree with the paper's interpretation and representation of the people involved and the issue itself.

Dear Tamarak Kaminsky,

My name is Jaime-Lee Bradford and I am writing to you because I disagree with the papers interpretation and representation of the people involved and the issue itself. Tamarak you have not only put the people who went bald and sacrificed their hair in danger you have put famous celebrities in danger too. I completely disagree with you because people who are involved with hair extensions are happy. The salons are happy, the celebrities are happy and the people who sacrificed their hair are happy. Tamarak you have just made it sound more worse then it actually is.

The papers interpretation and representation of the people involved and the issue itself is terrible. Celebrities should not be talked about in this manner, as you have now turned several people off these important people because you stated them as rich snobs that prance around with $5000 hair extensions in. This is evident when you state “strolled down the street in a push-up bra and with $5000 worth of imported human hair bouncing on her shoulders”. However you also tell the life story of people who sacrificed their hair, which then makes them feel out of place because everyone who reads this article knows that they had to get their head shaved with a dry razor and go to school bald. This is obvious when it she says “It shamed me. I had to go back to school completely bald.” Tamarak you have put both the celebrities and victims in an awkward position as you have misinterpreted and misrepresented the people involved and the issue itself.

Tamarak, hair extensions are completely normal and you are just simply making it seem like everything is a lot worse then it actually is. The salons are happy, which is evident in the article “Top hair salons enjoy the profits… does anyone dare to ask where it comes from, or how much women in poor countries are being paid”. The celebrities are happy because they look hot with the extensions they wear and pay a lot of money for and the people who sacrifice their hair are happy because they get paid for it and can make a living.

I hope you will consider thinking about what you have done and fix it because I disagree with the papers interpretation and representation of the people involved and the issue itself. Hair extensions are apart of life and it does not make anyone sad. I suggest you apologize to the celebrities and victims because you may very well have hurt them. I could not thank you enough for taking your time to read this letter about how I disagree with the papers interpretation and representation of the people involved and the issue itself.

Bullying Letter

Task

Our task was to write a formal letter to the Prime Minister in which I bring his attention an issue that I believe affects young Australians. In your letter you should provide suggestions on how the government can help in minimizing/ elimination this problem.

Letter

St Hilda’s School

PO Box 6022

House of Representatives
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600

Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

My name is Jaime-Lee Bradford and I am writing this letter about bullying and how I believe affects young Australians. I have recently been around to many public schools on the Gold coast and asked how they felt about bullying and if they thought it was a big issue in there school, not to mention the whole community. During their lunch times I went around and I asked a few people, some students said that they had been bullied numerous of times, but had been too scared to say anything. This is not on and this issue has to be addressed, as it not only effects the student, it affects the school and community.

Bullying is harming the health of young Australians, as it is causing physical injury, leaving people feeling scared and leaving them thinking that they only have very few options in their life. It is making young Australians feel stuck, guilty, alone, not accepted, rejected, depressed, unsafe, afraid, confused, stressed, and ashamed. Bullying should not be tolerated in Australia. It is hurting people, which is leading to highly unnecessary things, such as depression, suicide etc. It needs to stop otherwise this world is never going to have peace and people are not going to be safe. However it is not just the victims that need help, the bullies do to as they only behave like this if they have had experienced difficulties at home or in other work places, have a low self-esteem or have been a victim of bullying themselves and they are trying to find a way to make them feel more powerful.

I hope you will consider this issue as a huge problem that needs to be fixed. You, as the Prime Minister could help this issue by doing simple jobs as you have so much power over Australians. This may include campaigning about it by using television advertisements, billboards or posters. Organizing a show that a bullying company could put together to show at all of the schools or even get staff to run their own activities on bullying. Mr. Prime Minister you may arrange bullying spies at morning tea and lunch for all of the schools and allow permission for all schools to have serious but responsible consequences for the bully. You, as the government can help in minimizing and eliminating bullying, just by putting to action some of the suggestions stated above. I could not thank you enough for taking your time to read this letter on how bullying affects young Australians.

Yours Faithfully,
Jaime-Lee Bradford
