The character helps to demonstrate the theme, Love by falling in love with her future husband, Claudio. She also helps demonstrate heart break because when she goes to get married the first time and Claudio says no, she feels like her heart has been broken, as the love of her life never wanted to be with her again.

The quote: "In mine eye she is the sweetest lady that ever I looked on". This quote is saying that Hero is basically Claudios dream girl. He is saying that she is the perfect one for him.
